We all know that petrol burns while water does not! Last week, in Quiz Whizz, we asked you:

Why do some liquids burn while others do not?

 a. Liquid only burns if its molecules can combine with oxygen in the air

b. Only the liquid with low boiling point burns

c. Liquids with low molecular masses do not burn

d. All liquids burn

We would like to thank all of you for taking out time and answering the question. Kindly read on to find out the correct answer.

I must say most of you are strong in Chemistry and opted for the correct answer, option A. Liquids burn only if they react with oxygen to release energy. Consider alcohol as an example, when it chemically reacts with oxygen it gives out carbon dioxide and water along with heat, thus it burns. But if we analyze a liquid like water, it does not even react with oxygen, thus it does not burn.

Congratulations to those of you who opted for the correct answer. Stay tuned for the next episode of QUIZ WHIZZ, on Monday 10:00 pm.
